Fine Arts to present Got Soul live at Majestic Theatre May 2

Lancaster ISD fine arts students from elementary all the way up to high school showcased their talents before a live audience at the Majestic Theatre in Downtown Dallas May 2. Their show this year is titled “Lancaster’s Got Soul?” featured a celebration of Soul Train The Hippest Trip in America entertaining audiences with instrumental music, dance, theater and song.

“This show told a story from beginning to end,” Lancaster Theatre Instructor and script writer Camika Spencer said. “The crowd was entertained with the performances that present a powerful message that soul is in everyone and all one has to do is believe.”

The show will begin at 7PM and tickets can be purchased in advance at the administration building, high school campus, from performers or one of the fine arts instructors for $10. Sales begin April 18.

“This show is a multi-disciplinary involving students from various areas of the Lancaster Fine Arts Department,” Lancaster ISD Assistant Fine Arts Director Stacey St.Cyr-Lotten said. “Students from the district’s ensembles in band, choir, dance and theatre have all been working together to support the show’s theme. We will also have an installation from the art department that speaks to the soul train and it’s historical figures displayed in the lobby.”

Spencer, who  served as the play writer for the show, said she wanted to come up with an original story that didn’t mimic the current Don Cornelius story or a regular Soul Train episode.

“We wanted a family friendly show that was classy, sophisticated, entertaining and musical,” Spencer said. “Every time I arranged a piece for this show I would look back at it and if I felt something wasn’t right I would go back and create a new idea that would meet the expectations of the show.”
